Five fast tips to look younger

1. Exfoliate: get rid of the dry cells on the surface and energize your skin. Sloughing off the top layer reveals smoother more youthful looking skin. Exfoliation helps circulation, but you will need to moisturize, and pay special attention to sunscreen.

2. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize: That includes drinking plenty of water to plump cells from “the inside-out:” In addition, look for specially formulated “anti-aging” products on the market.

3. Whiten your teeth: brighten your smile with a good system – brighter teeth keep your smile looking fabulously vibrant.

4. Manicure/Pedicure: you can do this at home, or give yourself a treat and go to a salon. Tip to roll-back visible years: light polish colors on hands, brighter colors for toes.

5. Use a Foam Bronzer: add skin color without the surprise. Foams have the color in them, so you can see exactly where color is (or isn’t) before it sets. That way, you can smooth them out for even color. Excellent for a great hosiery-free day.

Have you heard of this new e.l.f.?

No – not the kind that helps Santa in the workshop. e.l.f. stands for “Eyes, lips, face” cosmetics. They are great!

The e.l.f. philosophy is very “best age ever”. They believe: that beauty comes from within, that beauty goes hand in hand with wellness, and that true beauty involves a holistic attitude.

We also love that they do not think cosmetics should break the budget- many items are $1-5. Karen also assures us that the items she uses have impressive quality levels – not at all like the (ahem) drug store cheapies we bought way back when.

Karen uses their products and raves about them. Her current favorite is the All Over Color Stick, also known as “3 in 1”, since you can use it as a lipstick, blushand highlighter. She just bought six more. Seriously.

Added bonus: e.l.f. offers many tutorials to recreate looks similar to more expensive cosmetic lines for a fraction of the price.

Karen swears by them. She loves the quality – and of course the price. So much so that we’ve added them to our affiliate list. And for icing on the cake: e.l.f. also carries mineral make-up!

Spotlight on giving back: Dignity You Wear

We found Dignity U Wear through Charity Navigator, and fell in love with what it does. Dignity U Wear was founded in April of 2000 in Jacksonville, Florida, by philanthropist and Holocaust survivor, Henri Landwirth. Henri knows what it means not to have clothes – to be stripped of dignity and to give up all hope. He founded Dignity U Wear to create real change in the lives of children and adults in need. His video says it all. Change you can see. Change that restores broken spirits and restores hope, dignity and self-esteem. That is why they distribute only brand new clothes.

When you purchase an item through bestageever.com, five percent of the revenue Best Age Ever receives will be donated to non-profit organizations like this, benefitting women and children. We hope to add more as we grow. If you have a recommendation, email us at tellus@bestageever.com.

Book Corner: Secrets from French women

Have you read French Women Don’t Get Fat by Mireille Guiliano? Yes, the book came out several years ago, but I absolutely love it! I picked it out of my bookshelf again last week, and cannot put it down.

Mireille Guliano has a charming style, and promotes very basic, healthful eating habits. Even better, she emphasizes the importance of pleasure instead of the guilt and deprivation dieting can bring. She is president and CEO of Clicquot, Inc. (as in great champagne) – and manages to stay trim in spite of constant dining at entertaining at restaurants.

Many of her suggestions are now in vogue: eat in season, buy local whenever possible and eat slowly. Oh yes- drink lots of water and take the stairs whenever possible.

Best of all, because it came out in 2005, it comes in paperback.

Quality food = beautiful skin

Nutrition and nourishment go hand in hand. The foods and beverages you put in your body, make your body. Truly.

Farmers markets are springing up all around, so you get the added bonus fresh foods and supporting local growers.

Many local stands offer varieties traditional stores don’t – like yellow tomatoes. Enjoy the added radiance in your skin, and energy in your step.

  • Fresh fruits and vegetables provide wonderful nutrients. Be certain to wash them completely, even if the bag says “pre-washed.
  • Rule of thumb: More color, more nutrients.
  • Rule of thumb 2: Less cooking, more nutrients plus enzymes. Caveat: be aware that some vegetables will require peeling and some caution. Potato eyes for example, have toxins that will not harm you when cooked, but can cause problems raw.
  • Processed foods strip nutrients away. Manufacturers may add some nutrients back in, but this never provides what the original food will.

Try new foods – nature provides an incredible bounty!
